Great day for Apple Bad Day for Blackberry

Friday was a great day for Apple as a total of 5M iPhone 5’s were sold through the weekend beating the debut of the iPhone 4S by a million units. This had Apple stock soaring and received much praise by fans and users alike.

Not to be beaten by news, Blackberry had a major outage on Apple’s big day, further sealing the fate of the once beloved company. The outage, which affected Europe and Africa went on for up to three hours for some users.

RIM sent out an official statement apologizing for the outage and assured users that no data or messages were lost. As Apple had its biggest day ever in the smartphone space, Blackberry continued its downward spiral with the latest outage.

Last October Blackberry users experienced a massive outage with millions of users affected for almost 3 days, seeing many of its users flee the service over what was called the “Worst Outage Ever.” The latest outage had many reliving the experience and further questioning the service.

RIM, since the October outage has seen its stock fall from $24 per share now to an all time low in the sub $7 range. RIM is frantically trying to downsize to stay afloat with continual layoffs. The company is trying hard to release its newest version of the smartphone operating system for the Blackberry; version 10 which it hopes will turn around the company.

Top brass from RIM is currently in San Jose California for its yearly developer conference, Blackberry Jam. It is expected that there will be announcements regarding its newest operating system, but new devices are not expected. RIM has a lot of work to do to get back to its glory, with Apple, Google, and even Microsoft innovating the smartphone arena Blackberry better get it together just to survive.
